Hegarty Award

Entries are now open for the prestigious PANPA 2012 Hegarty Prize, which recognises the management potential in young newspaper executives.

The prize was established in 1987 in memory of Patrick Hegarty, Executive Director of PANPA (1983-1986).

The Hegarty Prize is a bursary of $A10,000. Usually, it is used to finance a round-the-world study of any aspect of newspaper operations.

The winner must make a trip of at least 14 days. PANPA will assist with introductions for the winner and in planning the trip, which will be designed to expose the individual to newspaper techniques in other countries. The trip must be completed by June 30, 2013.

The winner will also receive an engraved plaque and the winner’s newspaper will receive the

PANPA Hegarty Prize perpetual plaque to display for a year. The winner will be required to give a presentation about their trip at the PANPA 2013 Annual Conference.

Nominations must be endorsed by the General Manager, Managing Director or CEO of the newspaper. Each PANPA newspaper member may make only one nomination.

  2. Carly says:

    Hi there,
Is there a section for journalists to enter? I only see one for photographers. Thanks.

    • Emily Tullock says:

      Hi Carly,

The Newspaper of the Year Awards only judge newspapers as a whole not individual journalistic talent – unlike the Canon Media Awards in New Zealand.

The only individual sections are the Hegarty Prize which recognises management potential in young executives, Marketer of the Year, and the photography section.

      regards,
Emily Tullock – The Newspaper Works
